Enzo Tiezzi – A Legacy Written in Time

From the historic Podere Soccorso to the new expressions of Brunello: a story of continuity, vision and respect for terroir in Montalcino.

The story of Enzo Tiezzi is inseparable from the history of Brunello di Montalcino itself.

It is a story made of experience, responsibility, and continuity — a dialogue between past and present that unfolds through vineyards, people, and wines.

After formative years at historic estates such as Poggio alle Mura, Col d’Orcia and Argiano, Enzo Tiezzi began his own personal project in the 1980s. A decisive moment came in 1999 with the acquisition of the historic Podere Soccorso, a site deeply rooted in the origins of Brunello.

This land already carried an international reputation at the end of the nineteenth century, when Riccardo Paccagnini, one of the true pioneers of Brunello, presented his wines at major exhibitions in Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux and Rome. His Brunello Soccorso won Gold Medals and Grand Prix, helping to shape the early identity of Brunello far beyond Tuscany.

By acquiring Podere Soccorso, Enzo Tiezzi did not simply purchase vineyards; he assumed the responsibility of preserving a historical narrative and giving it contemporary voice.

A Vision for Montalcino

Alongside his work in the vineyard and cellar, Enzo Tiezzi played a fundamental role in the institutional and cultural development of Montalcino. As President of the Consorzio, he supported and guided the creation of the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, becoming one of its founding figures.

He was also the visionary behind the Rosso di Montalcino denomination: a wine conceived to express Sangiovese in a younger, more immediate form, while Brunello continued its long journey of aging. This idea allowed producers to remain economically sustainable without sacrificing identity — a balance between time and necessity.

Today, the estate cultivates vineyards across five different properties, each with distinct soils and exposures. This mosaic of terroirs defines a style rooted in tradition but shaped by diversity.

Wines That Tell a Story

The tasting begins with Rosso di Montalcino 2024, produced from young vines at Podere San Carlo and Poggio Scopetto. Aged in cement and steel, it expresses freshness, clarity of fruit and an immediate connection with the vineyard. It is the everyday voice of Sangiovese, vibrant and sincere.

The Rosso di Montalcino DOC from Poggio Cerrino represents a deeper step into the territory. Aging in large oak casks for around eighteen months brings greater structure and complexity, while maintaining elegance and balance.

With the Brunello di Montalcino 2021, the classical soul of the estate fully emerges. Spontaneous fermentations, long macerations and forty-five months of aging in large Slavonian oak casks define a wine of restraint and precision. The tannins are fine and powdery, the structure harmonious, the expression faithful to a traditional interpretation of Brunello.

A new chapter is written with Brunello di Montalcino Tre Querci, born from a small vineyard on the north-eastern slope, planted in 2017 on marl-limestone soils known as terre bianche. Here, minerality and salinity become the central elements of the wine’s identity. Long aging between large casks and raw concrete, and a production limited to just 2,600 bottles, result in a wine of remarkable persistence and a strong, unmistakable character.

The journey concludes with Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Soccorso 2021, grown on sandy-loam soils with sedimentary rock fragments. Still partially closed, it already reveals floral notes of dried violet. On the palate it is juicy and velvety, elegant and complex, with the promise of long evolution ahead.

Continuity

Which wine should one choose?

There is no hierarchy — only different sensibilities.

Yet the mineral and saline profile of Brunello di Montalcino Tre Querci speaks with particular clarity today: a contemporary expression of a historic land, capable of uniting memory and modernity in the same glass.

At Enzo Tiezzi, wine is not only a product of grapes and time.

It is the continuation of a story that began more than a century ago — and still speaks, quietly, through every bottle.
